Frequently Asked Questions

Lynden Schools has established an extensive set of procedures to ensure the safe and healthy return to in-school learning. We’ve developed a list of answers to frequently asked questions.

What happens if someone who has been at school tests positive for COVID-19?

In the case of a positive COVID-19 case, contact tracing will be initiated. Using cohort groups allows for required quarantine of exposed individuals only. Any student or employee who is considered a close contact of the COVID-19 case will be required to quarantine away from the school for 14 days. The school will notify all individuals who may have been exposed to COVID-19 while on a school campus. 

When can a student who has tested positive for COVID-19 return to school?

In general, a positive COVID-19 test result in a 10-day recovery period. The individual must also show an improvement in symptoms. The Whatcom County Health Department also helps provide case-by-case recommendations for individuals with a positive COVID-19 test.

 

What if someone gets sick while at school?

All schools are identifying safe locations in their schools for sick students. If a student gets sick while at school, the parent/guardian will be called and asked to pick up their child as soon as possible. Sick employees will need to leave campus immediately

How soon can I return to school after having a non-COVID-19 sickness?

We ask that all students or staff suffering from an illness remain at home for 10 days unless they have a negative COVID-19 test.

What about students with a health condition that places them in the high-risk category?

If you have a child with underlying health conditions, please work with your school nurse on measures that can help provide additional health protection for your child. 

What if my child’s health screening sticker comes off or I forget to put it on?

Pre-5thgrade students arriving on campus with no health attestation sticker will lead staff to call parents to obtain a verbal attestation and remind them to complete a home attestation.

What happens if a student doesn’t pass a health screening upon arriving to the school building?

Students who do not pass a health screening will be referred to a school nurse for a second health check. The student will be directed to a safe and confidential space. If the student fails a second health screen, a parent/guardian will be called to pick the child up as soon as possible.

How will the face covering rule apply to a student who has a disability or documented health condition that makes wearing a face covering dangerous?

Some students, such as those with a respiratory condition or trouble breathing, may be exempt from the mask requirement. Parents seeking a mask exemption for their student should obtain a written documentation from a medical, legal or behavioral health professional.

 

Can you explain what food service will look like?

All meals are provided free to students and will be packaged in bags for delivery into classrooms each day. Students will eat lunch within their classroom or cohort.

Can I still pick up food for my students in Option 2 and Option 3?

Yes, curbside distribution of meals is available to all children 1-18 years old at all five school locations on Tuesday and Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. BVE will also host a 4:30 to 6 p.m. distribution session. The meal packets include three meals for each pick up.

What will look different on district buses?

Face coverings are required for anyone on a bus and students will have assigned seating. The windows will also be opened as much as possible and cleaning and disinfecting will happen more frequently.
